Menlo Park, California – September 18, 2025 – Meta Platforms has officially introduced its first consumer-ready smart glasses with an integrated digital display, marking a bold step in its push to merge everyday wearables with artificial intelligence.
At the company’s annual Meta Connect event, CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented the new Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, calling them a gateway to the future of “personal superintelligence.” Despite a few glitches during his live demo, the announcement drew strong applause from the audience.
A Glimpse Into AI-Powered Wearables
According to Zuckerberg, smart glasses offer the most natural way to interact with AI without being distracted from real-world experiences.
“Glasses are the ideal form factor for superintelligence. They help you stay present while boosting memory, communication, and even your senses,” he said.
The Ray-Ban Display glasses feature a small digital screen on the right lens, designed to show notifications and basic information. They come bundled with a wristband controller that recognizes hand gestures, allowing users to answer calls, send quick replies, and navigate apps seamlessly.
Priced at $799, the glasses will hit stores on September 30, 2025.
Competition & Challenges in the AI Race
Meta’s announcement comes as the company faces mounting competition from AI leaders like Google and OpenAI, who are ahead in launching advanced AI models. To keep pace, Meta is investing tens of billions into AI chips and aggressively recruiting top engineers across Silicon Valley.
However, Meta also continues to face criticism over child safety on its platforms. Recent reports highlighted concerns about inappropriate chatbot interactions and a lack of research into the effects of virtual reality on young users.
More Launches: Oakley Vanguard & Ray-Ban Upgrades
In addition to the Ray-Ban Display, Meta revealed Oakley Vanguard smart glasses tailored for athletes. Priced at $499, these glasses integrate with fitness apps like Garmin and Strava, providing real-time training metrics and post-workout summaries. They will be available from October 21, 2025, offering up to nine hours of battery life.
Meta also refreshed its earlier Ray-Ban Smart Glasses line, improving battery performance and upgrading the camera. The updated version will retail for $379.
Analysts Weigh In
Industry experts believe the new glasses may not see massive sales initially, given their high price point. Still, they view this launch as a stepping stone toward Meta’s much-hyped “Orion” glasses, expected in 2027.
Forrester analyst Mike Proulx compared the debut to Apple’s first smartwatch:
“Glasses are an everyday, non-intrusive form factor. While Meta needs to prove the value to consumers, the runway for market growth is wide.”
During the launch demo, not everything worked flawlessly — a call to the glasses failed mid-presentation, prompting Zuckerberg to laugh it off. Yet, many attendees agreed that despite early flaws, the technology signals a major leap in wearable AI innovation
